Sometimes rattlesnakes get in the way. During one of NREL researcher Lee Elliott's algae field trips, he encountered a four-foot rattlesnake. He used a long stick to move it away from the pond.

The amphitheater was constructed in the depression years of 1934-35 during Franklin D. Roosevelt's Federal Emergency Relief Administration. Camp George West's transient camp put 200 - 500 homeless to work on various projects including the amphitheater.
